The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first person to propose an International Yoga Day while delivering a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on 27th September 2014. Later that year, on 11th December, it got UN Declaration. One hundred seventy-seven nations co-sponsored the resolution.
Regarding the date for celebrating the International Day of Yoga, Mr. Narendra Modi again proposed 21st June. It is the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, with particular significance in many parts of the world. The first International Yoga Day was observed on 21st June 2015.
